Nellene holds an MA and PhD in English from The University of Iowa and a BA from Union University (TN). Nellene started tutoring with The English Tutor in 2015. She enjoys getting to know students individually and discovering how best to help them succeed, and she has experience with gifted students, students with learning disabilities, and students with test anxiety. Nellene also has taught as a professor at multiple universities and as a reserve teacher in Minneapolis Public Schools.
As an undergraduate, she studied in Oxford as part of an honors program, taught Greek labs to first year students, and assisted in research that led to a published academic book. She was then accepted to the University of Iowa’s English program as a Dean’s Scholar. During her graduate years, Nellene spent five years creating and teaching courses in rhetoric, composition, and literature. During one of these years, Nellene taught as an assistant professor at a liberal arts college. There, the students selected her as one of the faculty members most responsible for successful first year experiences.
She has extensive experience in college writing and in preparing students for college level academics. She also is a licensed substitute teacher in the Minneapolis Public Schools where she works with a wide variety of students, including those with developmental, behavior, and learning disabilities. This combination of experience allows her to work effectively with secondary students while retaining the perspective of a college professor.
On leave starting August 1, 2019.
