College Planning FAQs

When should we start college planning with The English Tutor?

The earliest we start working with students on college planning is during the summer before Junior year. While this is the optimal time to get started on college planning, we can start working with students as late as Senior year or even post-graduation. We meet students and families where they are in the process and design a college planning schedule to meet each student’s unique needs.

Do parents attend all college planning meetings with the student?

We invite parents to participate with students in the college planning process as much as the parents want. Most parents attend the first 2-3 meetings where we spend the majority of time crafting a college list and discussing financial aid. Most students attend the application and essay meetings on their own, but parents are always welcome to come with questions or to check in on the process. The College Planner will also send parents a summary of meetings so the parents are always informed on the student’s progress through the college planning process.

Can I get a free College Planning consultation before we sign up for services?

Yes! The English Tutor offers families a free 30-minute consultation to discuss the unique needs of the student with the College Planner. The College Planner can discuss the services that will work best for the student, a sample timeline of the process, and answer any questions that the parents have.

How many colleges should my student apply to?

While there is not a specific number of colleges that each student should apply to, we typically recommend that students apply to 6-8 colleges. Our College Planner will work with each student to help determine which colleges are the best fit for the student and help the student and parents analyze the list of colleges to ensure college options for the student are maximized.
